Carle Auditory Oral School was initially founded to help children with severe to profound hearing loss learn about their world through listening and spoken language. It was quickly discovered that the hands-on, language-rich learning environment affords a tremendous learning opportunity for children with typical hearing as well.
We have a 5:1 student to teacher ratio and each classroom teacher is highly qualified with a bachelor’s or master’s degree. The language-rich environment immerses children in spoken and written language to maximize communication skills.
Theme-based units of study, developed for preschool through second grade and discovery centers provide hands-on play so learning comes to life. Developing a solid foundation in phonological awareness, early reading and math skills as well as opportunities to explore science and social studies concepts, and gain experience with early music, art and physical education skills lays a solid foundation for future academic development throughout their educational careers.
With our 11-month calendar, beginning in early August and continuing until late June, children participate in 200 school days, Monday through Friday, from approximately 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Before and after-care is available at an additional cost with a childcare program available on teacher institute some days and July break.
